Diving at the SS Thistlegorm wreck is a remarkable experience, requiring at least two dives due to its substantial size. The first dive offers the chance to marvel at this underwater giant from the outside.

The wreck’s deepest point, the cantilever, lies approximately 32 meters beneath the surface, while the shallowest part reaches 16 meters. At around 30 meters, you’ll encounter one of the locomotives that once resided on the SS Thistlegorm. The ship suffered an explosion, causing it to break apart (the blast occurred in the ammunition storage), resulting in the stern section becoming separated from the rest of the wreck and slightly tilted.

Despite the damage, the propeller, ship’s rudder, and two guns remain remarkably preserved. The area where the ship ruptured houses an abundance of large-calibre ammunition, anti-tank mines, and overturned lightweight Universal Carrier MKII tanks.

This historic site is a diver’s paradise, offering a glimpse into the past and a chance to explore the marine life that now calls the SS Thistlegorm home. The combination of history and marine biodiversity makes this wreck one of the most fascinating and sought-after dive sites in the Red Sea.
